Like the rest of the world, Maine is taking measures to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 and are following CDC guidelines. The Maine Film Office takes these measures seriously, and we want to provide you with updates about safely reopening the Maine film industry (when the time is right).
Industry Infighting, Union Turf Battles Slow Development of Back-to-Work Plan
“The entertainment industry’s efforts to develop safety protocols for restarting production is predictably becoming a brawl among the major studios and Hollywood unions that has delayed the presentation of the industry’s back-to-work plan to state and local officials. As Variety has reported, jumpstarting production amid the coronavirus pandemic will be complicated and expensive.” – Variety
LEF New England’s Moving Image Fund (MIF)
“The next LEF Moving Image Fund deadline is Friday, June 5, 2020 at 11:59pm (midnight) Eastern for applicants seeking Pre-production and Early Development funding. The submission forms are now open.
“Since its inception, LEF’s Moving Image Fund has supported over 300 independent filmmaker projects with approximately $4 million in funding. The overarching goal of LEF New England’s philanthropic investment is to help build a sustainable and strong community of support for artists and their work.” – LEF
Two Projects Are Filming Again. Here’s How They’re Doing It.
In Iceland, a Netflix series relied on testing and color-coded armbands. In Australia, the entire cast and crew of a Stephen King adaptation quarantined together.
Baltasar Kormakur, the Icelandic director best known in the United States for “Everest” and “Contraband,” turned to a color-coded armband system to get his Netflix sci-fi series “Katla” back into production in Reykjavik after the coronavirus shut it down in mid-March.
“Extra Credit Adventure Edit”
Live and Online: Finalist Films Premiere, 5/13/2020 at 7 p.m.
The Extra Credit Adventure Edit was launched in early April by the Maine Outdoor Film Festival (MOFFs) as a way to support filmmakers and create some positivity during these weird times. The submitted films are outdoor and conservation minded and high-energy (aka really fun to watch).
